
The Carshalton Festival is back, Saturday June 24th to Sunday July 5th. The festival will engage its visitors in a range of paid and free cultural experiences in professional artists open studios, thriving theatre spaces, music in pubs, programs in heritage buildings, collaborations with local businesses and exhibitions in galleries. We wish to inspire and bring joy to our communities.
We are proud to be working with a wide range of groups and businesses such as Carshalton Artists, Cryer Arts, Sutton Writers, Cryerfolk, Logo Fiasco, Looking For The Magic Records, Friends of Sutton Ecology Centre, EcoLocal, SACCO, Black Swan Border Morris, Carshalton Jazz, All Saints Carshalton and many more!
The Festival event calendar is already getting full with established and new events. CARSHALTON ARTISTS OPEN STUDIOS and TEEN CAOS with showcase artists both young and old. Carshalton Artists Open Studios is in its10th year and what a year it will be!
CARSHALTON MUSIC CRAWL was a highlight in 2022 and will be again. This time we start the night with in-store, 'Tiny Desk' performances in two local record shops and then extend across Carshalton in pubs and bars with stripped back acoustic and live band sets.
At Carshalton Festival we are proud to celebrate a huge range of musical influences, with CRYER FOLK open mic folk club at Cryer Arts Carshalton, the BLACK SWAN DAY OF DANCE with dance groups joining BLACK SWAN MORRIS in a celebration of public dance. Added to that is the ARTS NETWORK SUTTON GALA CONCERT at ALL SAINTS CHURCH, celebrated string players and Jazz in OAKS PARK, TALES FROM THE OPERAS young opera drop in workshop and ELECTRONICA NIGHT in a historic grade 2 listed church!
A DRAMA FRINGE will explore new writing and small works from local college students and a new film WE WHO HUNGER with Q and A by the directors and music composer. FILM will be further celebrated in pop up film nights and a SHORT FILM NIGHT with short films by local film makers.
Spoken word was a huge success before and will be celebrated again with SUTTON WRITERS 40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENING bringing to you spoken word from a wide range of writters.
There will be so many opportunities to join in and experience first hand, the arts. DRAWING PLEIN AIR WITH CARSHALTON ARTISTS Neal Vaughan and Helena Vaughan in Grove Park and the surrounding area will be very popular, as will the vast array of events at THE FRIENDS OF THE ECOLOGY CENTRE GARDEN PARTY, where Ecology and family is the centre of all things. The combination of performance and visual arts combing was a theme throughout the festival with live music and chances to draw at the ROSE AND CROWN, CARSHALTON JAZZ at ALL SAINTS CHURCH, CRYER FOLK NIGHT at CRYER ARTS and with DANCE & DRAW WITH MEL SIMPSON & JEZ WILES at the CRYER ARTS MARQUEE.
The historic GREYHOUND HOTEL kicked off the festival with live music and exhibitions at HONEYWOOD MUSEUM celebrating the Queen's Jubilee and an exhibition run by the OAKS PARK ARTISTS. Also the Festival 'Jack' made its appearance during the opening day. The 'Jack of Hope' was to appear at other venues throughout the week. Other artists followed suit, such as DOUG SHAW'S in the SUN PUB with the chance also to collaborate on a community collage that hung in the window.
Local schools joined SUTON MUSIC SERVICE in a day of music performance at CRYER ARTS in Carshalton and a Friday night then turned over to the CARSHALTON LIVE MUSIC CRAWL An amazing night of music across Carshalton with MARTIN. WOODFORD at THE HOPE, KAZOOM and guests at CRYER ARTS MARQUEE, CRIAG EDMONDS at the COACH and HORSES UNITED STOATS of AMERICA at the RACEHOURSE, TV 200 at THE RAILWAY and DIRTY SPOONS at THE RACEHORSE.
The CARSHALTON DAY OF DANCE across Carshalton was filled by opportunities to watch, join in and even draw the dancers with BLACK SWAN MORRIS and the morris groups parading the CARSHALTON FESTIVAL JACK with its messages of hope through GROVE PARK and THE GARY MASON DRUMMERS DRUMMING WORKSHOP tdoing the same at CRYER ARTS MARQUEE.
Further join in sessions happened with traditional dancing group MADDY MILL MOLLY, a sketching workshop with CLAIRE CHANLER aimed at home educators, office workers and after school families, a pop up exhibition at NICKEL SUPPORT CAFE with artwork by children from GET ON DOWNS and CAOS ACROSS CARSHALTON, an art trail of visual arts by Carshalton Artists on the theme of Water accompanied by poems from SUTTON WRITERS. Another higlight was joining DOVES VAGARIES in a CEILIDH AT THE CRYER.
The festival closed on the Sunday with SUMMER GARDEN PARTY, HOSTED BY FRIENDS OF THE ECOLOGY CENTRE AND ECOLOCAL With storytelling from ANDY COPPS and KARIN JASHAPARA. There were stalls, woodland craft activities, refreshments, rolls and handmade cakes in the grounds of the SUTTON ECOLOGY CENTRE. There was also another chance to see a popular choir group in the beautiful All Saints Church and finally, LIZ ANDREWS and JEZ WILES closed the festival with a stunning chello and Mbira set at ALL SAINTS.
